“Sacred Darkness and Light” Song Video
Our worship songs and readings often give negative meanings to darkness and positive meanings to light. We can contribute to racial justice and equity by changing the traditional symbolism of darkness as evil or ominous and light as good to symbolism of both darkness and light as sacred and good.
This song, like many of my others, affirms the sacred value of people of color in the divine image by giving positive meanings to images of darkness, by reclaiming the “treasures of darkness” (Isaiah 45:3). We sing of sacred Darkness and Light.
The tunnel of Darkness is the tunnel of Light;
somewhat afraid we follow the path.
Once we get through it we feel new;
once we get through it we know what to do,
Sacred Darkness and Light,
Sacred Darkness and Light..
The pathway of Darkness is the pathway of Light;
Darkness and Light will guide us to Her.
Now with our Mother we feel new;
with Her within us we know what to do,
Sacred Darkness and Light,
Sacred Darkness and Light.
