Come, Mother Eagle

Among the powerful Female Divine images in the Bible is Mother Eagle. Deuteronomy 32:11-12 depicts Deity as a Mother Eagle who stirs up Her nest to get the young eagles out flying on their own and hunting their own food.

When little eagles are old enough to leave the nest, their mother shakes the nest and flutters her wings over them. Then she takes them on her wings to teach them to fly. When she thinks they are ready, she swoops down to let them fly on their own. But she stays close enough to swoop back under them and help them when they become too weary and weak to continue flying on their own.

This is a beautiful picture of a loving Creator, nurturing and supporting us as we grow, always aiming at the goal of our becoming all She created us to be. The biblical divine name and image of Mother Eagle empowers me, and I offer it to you for inspiration and renewed hope.

One of my callings is mining Scripture to explore Female Divine names and images. I’m not saying that the Divine is literally a woman. All our language for Divine Mystery is metaphorical. We need to include Female Divine metaphors to affirm the sacred value of females who have long been devalued, excluded, and oppressed. Just as the Black Lives Matter movement has taught us that, though all lives matter, we need to name that Black lives matter because they have not mattered enough in our culture, so we need to name females in the divine image, though all genders are in the divine image. It’s important to specifically name and image females and others who have been oppressed, devalued, and excluded.

“Mother Eagle, come, show us how to make the world new with you always nigh.”

Come, come, Mother Eagle, come and lift us high.
Come, take us on your empowering wings, and help us all fly.
Come, show us how to make the world new, with you always nigh.

Come, come, Mother Eagle, come and lift us high.
Come, take us on your empowering wings, and help us all fly.
Come, show us how to make the world new, with you always nigh.
